A taste tester's life is not easy. But someone had to decide, once and for all, who makes a better doughnut--Dunkin' Donuts or its fast-growing rival, Krispy Kreme.
We asked a panel of trained taste testers to sample yeast-raised glazed doughnuts, which both makers report is a top seller. We chose another of Dunkin' Donuts best-selling varieties--its glazed chocolate-cake doughnut--to compare with a Krispy Kreme counterpart. (Krispy Kreme says its cake doughnuts aren't particularly big sellers.)
The verdict? An even split.
Of the yeast-raised glazed doughnuts, the Krispy Kreme was a melt-in-your-mouth standout--very fresh, sweet, and moist, with a slightly crispy glaze. The Dunkin' Donuts offering was OK but somewhat chewy. It was less sweet, less moist, and the glaze was thin and sticky.
