Johnson, Schilling lead the way to first place
WHAT WENT RIGHT: LHP Randy Johnson and RHP Curt Schilling lived up to expectations as a 1-2 pitching punch, both reaching double digits in victories. LF Luis Gonzalez probably was the MVP of the first half, hitting for career-best power and average. Almost every call-up from Class AAA Tucson filled in admirably--especially RHPs Bret Prinz and Robert Ellis. 1B Mark Grace showed he is not finished yet, batting better than .300 with nine home runs while playing his usual strong defense. IF Craig Counsell became a regular when 3B Matt Williams suffered leg injuries and eventually took over as the leadoff man. OF David Dellucci and IF Erubiel Durazo led a strong squad of pinch hitters.
WHAT WENT WRONG: Offensive production was less than expected from many players. SS Tony Womack struggled enough to be dropped from leadoff to eighth in the order. CF Steve Finley just is starting to get on track and has not yet hit for consistent power. Injuries have struck the team in large numbers, especially on the mound. RHPs Brian Anderson, Armando Reynoso, Todd Stottlemyre, Bobby Witt, Mike Morgan, Matt Mantei and Russ Springer were hurt. Williams has been out since mid-May with a sore left leg and might never return to his 1999 form. The team has been inconsistent at situational hitting, especially with men in scoring position.
WHAT'S AHEAD: The team might add a closer, possibly from within. Prinz has had statistical success but is not dominating, so the team will look at Jose Valverde, 21, the closer at Class AA El Paso who has 62 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings. If the front office decides to go after a proven closer, it will want a true rent-a-player--someone who is a free agent after the season. Oakland's Jason Isringhausen, Detroit's Todd Jones, Pittsburgh's Mike Williams and Kansas City's Roberto Hernandez fit the bill. Williams should be back for the second half, and if he can play well or if Finley comes around, the team will gain a needed bat in the middle of the order.--Ed Price
DUGOUT SIGNALS There is no set closer. RHPs Bret Prinz and Byung-Hyun Kim are sharing the role. Manager Bob Brenly will go by matchups and feel on whom to use. Prinz tends to get in trouble. Kim is always a mystery, but he has been better lately.
