The Mariners are shaping up as one of baseball's all-time winningest teams, and second baseman Bret Boone is one of the reasons for their success. He talks with senior writer Michael Knisley about how Seattle compares with other great teams.
TSN: When the '98 Yankees won all those games, they didn't have a position player who was an All-Star Game starter. You had to look beyond the statistics to see how they won. Are the Mariners like that?
BB: I played against the Yankees in the World Series in '99. What stood out to me was, yeah, they had talented players and a good pitching staff. You look at their lineup, though, and nobody jumped out at you hitting 30 home runs. But they were so patient. Those guys would just make you pitch. They'd wear the pitcher down. I mean, if you weren't going to throw a strike, they weren't going to swing.
TSN: In that context, are there similarities in Seattle this year?
BB: I think so. But I don't think it's fair to compare us to what they've done. They've done it for so long. They have one of the greatest teams ever assembled. It's a special team ...
