Gotta love books: bound paper with the power to nourish and encourage, inform and motivate. Just reading a good title can be satisfying. Mothering's newest crop has arrived, and what follows are my favorites: books to help you change the world or just get you through the day. Whatever the need--quiet comfort, a new vision, or a hearty laugh--I bet it'll be met in the pages of these volumes.
Mother's Nature: Calm and Confidence for the Motherhood Journey by Andrea Alban Gosline is a beautiful set of 64 inspiration cards. The wise affirmations and dreamy pastel paintings by Lisa Burnett Bossi invoke the tenderness and fortitude needed to be a mom. Times to Treasure: Joyful Ideas for Families is an equally lovely set of cards by the same author. (Both from Cedco Publishing Company, 2001)
In Sacred Connections: Stories of Adoption, Mary Ann Koenig's moving essays and Niki Berg's intimate black-and-white photographs portray the lives of families touched by adoption. (Running Press, 2000)
Compiled by Sherry S. Handel, Blue Jean: What Young Women Are Thinking, Saying, and Doing is an empowering collection of articles and stories from the by-teens, for-teens magazine Blue Jean. Includes chapters on volunteering, ethnicity and race, and even how to produce an original zine. (Blue Jean Press, 2001; www.bluejeanpress.com)
Janice Robinson's Pride & Joy: African-American Baby Celebrations gives myriad suggestions for feting a new child and mother with traditional African and African-American rituals. Includes chapters on baby showers, birth customs, and naming ceremonies. (Pocket Books, 2001)
The Real Boys Workbook by Real Boys author William S. Pollack, PhD, and Kathleen Cushman uses probing question-and-answer exercises to help adults better understand and connect with boys. (Villard, 2001)
The Price of Motherhood: Why the Most Important Job in the World Is Still the Least Valued by journalist and Pulitzer Prize nominee Ann Crittenden is a penetrating investigation of the gross economic injustices US mothers endure. (Metropolitan Books, 2001)
