Majorities of blacks and whites believe there has been a lot of progress in getting rid of racial discrimination since the 1960s, and both groups say that race relations in their own communities are generally good. Blacks are much less positive than whites, however, on the state of race relations in the country. Blacks are also downhearted about whether racial equality will be achieved in their lifetime. Just 6 percent say blacks have already achieved it.
