For years now, media ombudsmen have noted that in the entire network television news universe, there is only one full-time religion correspondent--a deployment of resources that simply does not match the level of importance that everyday Americans place on religion.
As of October, there will be none. Today's sole correspondent--ABC's Peggy Wehmeyer--is being dismissed.
"Peggy just never seemed to get on track," explained ABC News executive vice president Paul Friedman. Apparently, the network's executives are slow in drawing conclusions, for Wehmeyer has been in her position since 1994. Did she spend seven years off track?
