Though there were some ugly statistics in Bama's loss at home to UCLA on Saturday night, there also was progress made toward rebuilding one of college football's great empires. Yes, the goods outnumbered the bads in coach Dennis Franchione's debut.

The biggest positive was the fact the Crimson Tide coaching staff didn't stray from its offensive game plan when things started to stall. Under the Mike DuBose regime, Alabama lacked an offensive identity. Was the Tide a passing team or a running team? Was the Tide a team? ...
