Chris Berman had three goals when he graduated from college:
"One--Get on TV by age 25; I made it at 24 when ESPN put me on overnights ...
"Two--Announce San Francisco Giants games, which I've done for ESPN ...
"Three--Be Brent."
What red-blooded American didn't want to be Brent Musburger? He was Madonna, recognizable by first name. So groovy they parodied him on Saturday Night Live. He anchored/announced every sports spectacular on the No. 1-rated network, in particular "The NFL Today onnnnn CCCCBSSSSSS."
Well. When ESPN's new season of NFL Countdown kicks off, Berman will out-Brent Brent by working as the host of a pregame show for a 16th year, eclipsing Brent's "record" for 1975-89. "Like Lou Gehrig," says Musburger, never at a loss for hype. "I'm flattered it's Chris breaking it."
Even before both were Disney employees (ABC hired Brent in 1991), theirs was a mutual admiration society. When CBS waived Musburger in 1990 after a salary dispute, Berman donned eyeglass frames like Brent's on SportsCenter in tribute. The first Sunday that fall, Musburger was a guest on Berman's pregame set--Carson, passing the torch to Leno.
