The silence is deafening. Not a word, not a peep. No one is saying anything about negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement. That worried me. We're getting to the point where we can't ignore it much longer.
Actually, we've been at that point for some time. But we've ignored it, anyway.
So I started asking around. What's up? Is anybody even meeting with anybody else? Is no news good news? Or is no news the worst news? The last time we went through this, they'd already stopped the game by this stage of the season. Remember? August 12, 1994. No more baseball.
What does it mean that we're into the last week of August on this go-round and nothing is being said?
Here's what I found out: I shouldn't worry too much ... yet.
There have been "preliminary talks." There have been "low-level" negotiations. Nothing serious. No big-issue showdowns yet. The meetings might start getting more meaningful, more serious, about the middle of September.
Why then? Each side ...
