If someone had said in spring training that J.D. Drew and Albert Pujols would become the Cardinals' Nos. 3 and 4 hitters, the first question would have been: "Are Jim Edmonds and Mark McGwire getting deported?" The second would have been: "Will the Cardinals finish 20 games out of first place or 30?"

Well, Edmonds and McGwire are still U.S. citizens, though injuries have altered their identities. And the defending N.L. Central champion Cardinals are back in contention, a place they could remain for the better part of the decade even if they overrated Edmonds and even if they're facing the beginning of the end with McGwire.
