Utah's construction industry is heading into its tenth year of sustained growth. The fastest growing sector of the industry remains retail construction, accounting for nearly one-third more retail square feet in 2000 than in 1999. Residential, office and industrial development sectors are still healthy but have cooled somewhat over previous years. The long-term outlook for construction is weaker: analysts predict that the industry may lose as many as 25,000 jobs after completion of projects for the 2002 Winter Olympics, and despite low interest rates the residential housing market will slow due to decreased in-state migration and lagging consumer confidence.
