Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn painted many women, some of them members of his family and household and others commissioned by the gentry. His first models were his mother and his sisters, followed by his wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh, his housekeeper, Geertje Dircks, and his mistress, Hendrickje Stoffels. In these paintings blemishes and shortcomings were faithfully rendered. However, the solid citizens of Amsterdam wanted to be remembered as sober pillars of society, and Rembrandt obliged.
