The golden age of watercolors.(Brief Article)
Private collections most often reflect the taste and purse of a single person, unanswerable to anyone else. Sir Hickman Beckett Bacon (1855- 1945) is an excellent example. A wealthy businessman and philanthropist, he collected some four hundred late eighteenth-and early nineteenth-century British watercolors. He died without issue, and the collection is now owned by his great-nephew, Sir Nicholas Bacon.
Sir Hickman had unusual tastes for his time. His collection is especially strong in the ethereal late watercolors of Joseph Mallord William Turner, which only became widely popular after the advent of abstract painting in the mid-twentieth century.
