WHAT WE TESTED, WHAT WE FOUND
Three years into our continuous tests of exterior house stains, about half of the red and green solid stains are holding up well. The white stains are ready for cleaning and a new coat. This testing represents some six to eight years of real-life exposure to the elements. The Ratings also show five new products with only a year's testing.
Solid stains significantly outperform semitransparent stains, which reveal some wood grain. The semitransparent stains we included at the beginning of this project have shown so much deterioration that we aren't evaluating them further. But because they are still on the market, we continue to show their results. We also have a year's testing on True Value Woodsman, which is good to very good in dirt buildup and is resisting mildew quite well, but showing marked color change.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Solid stains are the best choice. Those still judged good overall make fine choices. Consider first the Olympic Premium, Behr Plus 10, and (in white) Sherwin Williams.
