WHAT'S NEW
Improved energy efficiency. Refrigerators made after July 1 must meet updated federal standards that require them to use about 30 percent less energy than under the previous 1993 rules. (Some models made before July 1 also meet the new standards.) This is our first report featuring only models built under the new standards. Ratings that include additional models will be available free on our web site, www.ConsumerReports.org, from mid-September until the end of October, and in a full report scheduled for the January 2002 issue of CONSUMER REPORTS.
