The reds are on the rise. Amid the sea of white wines that Americans have favored in recent years--including the tsunami known as chardonnay, the white-wine varietal that alone represents nearly 20 percent of U.S. wine sales--there's a strong current carrying red wines to new prominence. Sales of reds more than doubled over the past decade while sales of whites dropped slightly, according to data from the Wine Institute, an association of California wineries and affiliated businesses.
