Before plastic wrap and Tupperware, granny used vinyl showercap-like covers to protect dinner leftovers in the fridge. The caps are still sold through catalogs like The Vermont Country Store. Recently, SC Johnson put a modern spin on them with a disposable version called Saran QuickCovers, sold in supermarkets for $3 per box of 10 to 16 caps, depending on the size. In tests comparing QuickCoverswith Glad Cling Wrap, $2.30, Reynolds Plastic Wrap, $4, and Saran Wrap with Cling Plus, $3, the caps were remarkably puncture-resistant and very good at keeping moisture constant (in, for foods like mashed potatoes, or out, for foods like cereal) and keeping odors from permeating the refrigerator.
