After years of controversy, rezoning could lead to 400,000 s.f. adjacent to Town Lake

Progress on 400,000 square feet of planned mixed use space on a coveted and controversial downtown site might mean the parcel finally will be developed.

Zoning changes are pending for a 4-acre site at the northeast corner of West Cesar Chavez Street and Lamar Boulevard. The parcel, commonly referred to as the Sandy Beach Preserve, is home to The cedar Door bar and is immediately across Cesar Chavez from Town Lake.

The Changes are the first step in implementing terms of a legal settlement between the City of Austin and Lumbermen's. Investment -- a subsidiary of Temple-Inland Inc. -- reached last November.
