OAKLAND, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 21, 2001
Statement by Tom Margro, General Manager BART
Now is Not the Time for a Strike
Despite meeting all afternoon and night on Saturday, AFSCME is still making economic demands that exceed the 22% final offer that we made over two weeks ago.
The BART Board is firm in its offer of the same 22 percent pay raise and benefits package to AFSCME that was accepted last month by its two larger unions, ATU and SEIU. We have told AFSCME throughout the week that we will review any new proposals that fit within our best and final offer. We've been clear about what we can do and what we can't do. We can't add more money to the 22% package or create inefficiencies in this contract.
AFSCME's most recent proposals do not meet that test. It is up to AFSCME to either reconsider its position or make a new proposal that fits within the bounds of our best and final offer.
