Home theater in a box puts the digital receiver/tuner, multiple speakers, and wiring needed to capture the movie-theater experience in one convenient package that connects to your TV and VCR. Most systems include the ability to decode the digital-audio soundtracks on DVD movies and from satellite-TV and certain cable transmissions. One tested system, the Onkyo LSV-900, has a built-in DVD player.
These box-type systems deliver surround sound without your having to match speakers to each other, a receiver, and--for the Onkyo system--a DVD player. And, with prices starting at $300, you may pay less than you would by buying all those components separately.
