The new Kenmore Elite HE 3t front-loading washer tops the charts in our tests, setting performance standards for other makers to match. Here are the highlights:
High efficiency. The Elite (and similar Whirlpool Duet) proved thriftier with water than any washer we've tested. In its heavy-duty cycle, the Elite uses only 17 gallons for an 8-pound wash load, 25 gallons for 20 pounds. That's less than half the water many top-loaders use. It's the quietest and most energy-efficient washer we've tested.
Large capacity. The Elite has the largest capacity of any washer we've tested. It can hold 32 small bath towels in a single load.
Smart controls. Among the Elite's nine settings: Silk, which washes without final spin that can set wrinkles; Whitest White, which automatically dispenses bleach at the appropriate time; and Sanitary, which boosts the water temperature to about 150[degrees] F.
