Last year's massive Firestone tire recall was only the beginning. This year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has pushed Firestone to recall millions more tires after an initial investigation revealed high failure rates. Firestone has refused. As we went to press, NHTSA was expected to announce its defect decision, which could lead to a forced recall.
At issue are all 15- and 16-inch Firestone Wilderness A/T sportutility and pickup-truck tires except those made at Firestone's Aiken County plant, in Graniteville, S.C., according to published reports. Tires made there have a code that begins with 8X (see "How to Read a Tire," page 62).
Already, Ford is voluntarily replacing 13 million Wilderness A/T tires on its SUVs and pickups. A NHTSA recall would include affected vehicles from all carmakers.
Firestone says that its tires are safe, and it blames rollovers that occurred after tire failure on "inherent flaws" in Explorers built before Ford's redesigned, 2002 model. Meanwhile, both companies have paid millions of dollars in settlements of consumer lawsuits.
Another potential problem: General Ameri*550AS tires, size P235/70R16, which ...
