Brenly can't find a hot hand in too-cold bullpen
Manager Bob Brenly has ridden the hot hand in the bullpen all season, but there aren't many now. Closer RHP Byung-Hyun Kim has been ineffective for most of September, and the search is on for effective setup men. RHP Bret Prinz's return from rotator-cuff tendinitis is in doubt. Veteran RHP Mike Morgan put together 10 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings before a poor outing last Thursday. Rookie RHP Mike Koplove exhibited poor control in consecutive games, and LHP Greg Swindell has fallen out of favor. Brenly might have to move starting RHP Miguel Batista to the bullpen for the playoffs.... The team received a bit of a scare last week when C Damian Miller, in many ways the least replaceable player in the everyday lineup, was diagnosed with a 35 percent tear in his rotator cuff. The tear, however, was within the tendon and not across it, and Miller was expected to miss only 3-4 days. Miller has been playing with a partially torn left Achilles tendon for most of the second half.
SCOUTING REPORT: After two seasons as an effective, durable reliever, Swindell has not had a good year. His biggest problem has been home runs--he has allowed 12 in 53 innings. Swindell may have been affected by irregular use this year; over the past two seasons, he averaged 70 1/3 innings and pitched two innings in a game many times. This year he has done so only three times.
SEE A DIFFERENT GAME: Brenly's tendency to ride the hot hand (along with some injuries) led him to use 114 batting orders in the first 153 games. That's a lot for a contending team. All told, Arizona could go into the postseason without any certainty at catcher (because of Miller's injury), first base, second base and right field. And Prinz's injury has left a void at setup man. Many teams use the first part of the season to establish players' roles for the stretch run, but those roles are still a work in progress for the Diamondbacks. --Ed Price
