Barry Bonds deserves the home run crown, but in this era of outrageous offense, it might not be his for long
Barry Bonds, soon to be the incomparable Barry Bonds, has done his part. As the week began, he was about to become the king--the home run king--and there are no ifs, ands or buts permitted about that, even if Mark McGwire selfishly thinks Bonds' crown comes with fewer thorns than his did three years ago. (McGwire needed to hit "only" 62 home runs for his record; Bonds needed 71. That's nine more thorns than McGwire endured. End of debate.)
There can be no disparagement of the feat, no mandatory points deductions for Bonds' sometimes-churlish ...
