Dawn M. Malcolm, 30, of Brooklyn, New York, was sitting in a subway car on July 14, 1999 when a stranger approached her and, without provocation, slashed one of her hands with a knife. Patrick Ramnauth, 50, a maintenance supervisor, was sitting nearby. He quickly intervened, placing his hard hat between the assailant and Malcolm as the man struck again.
