NATO to Police Israeli-Palestinian Conflict?(questionable Middle East peace plan by New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman)(Brief Article)
New York Times foreign affairs columnist Thomas L. Friedman has a grand design for a Middle East peace settlement: Deploy NATO to conduct a Kosovo-style "peacekeeping" mission to Israel.
"Obviously, first there would have to be a cease-fire and some cooling-down period" between Israelis and Palestinians, wrote Friedman in his September 4th column. At that point a deal should be struck in which Israel "agrees to withdraw from the West Bank and Gaza along the lines proposed by Bill Clinton -- which is to say from roughly 95 percent of the territories.... In return, the Palestinians would have to agree that their state would be entirely demilitarized and that this demilitarization would be supervised and maintained by 30,000 NATO troops, similar to Kosovo's. NATO would have responsibility for controlling all borders and entry points, to ensure that no heavy weapons come in, and would work with the Palestinian police force -- the only armed units Palestinians would be permitted -- on internal ...
