The reign of Charles II (1660-1685) was characterized by religious strife, the plague in 1664 and 1665, the Great Fire of London the following year, and constant negotiations with Parliament and France. But there were also lighter moments. Literatare, architecture, and science flourished, as did the king's love life.
Charles's mistresses included Nell Gwynn, an orange seller turned actress; Barbara Villiers Palmer, the duchess of Cleveland; and Louise de Keroualle, the duchess of Portsmouth. At least fourteen of his illegitimate children are known, and the king raised many of them and their mothers to the nobility His queen, Catherine of Braganza, was a pious, childiess woman, so Charles was succeeded on the throne by his brother James II.
