Portraits inform the viewer of what the subject looks like, but by costume and attributes, the subject's character and social position can be discerned. Initially, portraits were the province of royalty the nobility, and the clergy. After all, it was a flattering portrait of Anne of Cleves that persuaded Henry VIII to many her. By the sixteenth century, the bourgeoisie could afford the luxury of portraits and artists depicted whole families.
