BIG TEN CONFERENCE
Zak Kustolk, Northwestern
The tailback is a Heisman Trophy candidate who runs for big yards, scores touchdowns and gets publicity. The quarterback is gritty, gutty and overachieving. At least that's the way it looks.
"Nothing could be further from the truth" says Northwestern offensive lineman Leon Brockmeier.
Tailback Damien Anderson gets the hype, but the Wildcats' offense doesn't go without senior quarterback Zak Kustok, the Big Ten's most dynamic player and the reason coaches around the league say they fear Northwestern's spread.
The offense is designed to take advantage of Kustok's accuracy and athleticism with straight drops, rollouts and shotgun formations. Unlike most offenses, the passing game sets up the run, and Kustok is one of the most efficient throwers in the nation.
He also gives the 'Cats another running threat, getting the season off to a smashing start with an acrobatic touchdown run in the opener against UNLV. The play was a microcosm of Kustok at Northwestern: a twisting, turning, 360-degree spin to get into the end zone. It's that talent and desire that have the 'Cats primed for a fourth conference title in seven years.
