HANOI, Oct 1 Asia Pulse - The Vietnam Sugar Producers' Association has set an ambitious target to export 200,000-250,000 tonnes of sugar, or 25 per cent of the output of this year's crop, said Le Van Tam, chairman of the association, in a recent interview.
This was difficult because traders expected sugar prices from this year's crop would be higher than the previous one, he said.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam exported 140,000 tonnes of sugar, not counting an additional 60,000 tonnes via border trade from last year's crop, (October 2000 to May 2001).
Vietnam also imported tens of thousands of tonnes of crude sugar for refining and then re-exports at the end of the crop to sustain local prices.
With a total designed capacity of 55,600 tonnes of sugarcane per day, refineries in Vietnam need 8.3 million tonnes of materials this year.
