- Prime Minister Phan Van Khai has signed a decision on the national programme of poor alleviation and job settlement for the 2001-2005 period. Under the programme, Vietnam will reduce the rate of poor households below 10 per cent by 2005.
- A programme on sports and physical training cooperation between Vietnam and Laos in the 2002-2003 period has been signed during a visit to Laos by Minister-Chairman Nguyen Danh Thai of the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Committee. Under the newly-inked programme, both sides will exchange experiences in managing and developing sports and physical training in their respective countries.

- Vietnam is expected to notch up 7.1 per cent growth in gross domestic product (GDP) this year, beating last year's rate but falling short of the official target, according to the Vietnam Statistics Office's estimate.
