MASHHAD, Oct 1 Asia Pulse - World Food Program (WFP) representative in Iran, Marius De-Gaay Fortman told IRNA Sunday, "WFP's US$19 million aid package to Iran is intended to supply food for Afghan refugees who may seek asylum in Iran in case of U.S. attacks on Afghanistan."
Fortman added that the amount is based on the estimated number of Afghan refugees at 400,000. He said, "The package is part of the US$160 million aid provided for the region."
He declared that total amount of aid package dedicated to the region is based on Afghan population of 7.5 million including 6.6 million residing in Afghanistan, and 1.5 million refugees in Iran and Pakistan.
He noted that since the number of Afghan refugees expected to seek asylum in Pakistan will possibly be 2.5-3 times those turning to Iran, Pakistan will be provided with a greater aid package.
He added, "The said amount is adjustable, and may vary based on the number of refugees seeking refuge in each country."
He referred as well to the new WFP office to be opened in Mashhad, in the northeast of Iran, within the coming week, and said that his colleagues are waiting to receive their entry visa, while he appreciated the efforts of the officials at the Interior Ministry's department dealing with foreign ...
