MELBOURNE, Oct 1 Asia Pulse - The Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific said today that terrorist attacks on the United States had placed the global aviation industry in a "parlous state", at an already difficult time for the sector.
Asian airlines have had some shelter from the full ramifications of the events in the US but were still feeling some fall-out, according to Tony Tyler, corporate development director with Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific.
"The Asian carriers perhaps (have) not (been) affected quite as much yet as they will be but it's a very, very unhappy situation for us," he told Channel Nine's Business Sunday program.
Cathay Pacific had experienced a sudden decline in traffic across the Pacific and its forward bookings were also looking weak.
"We're still seeing some weakness in the regional flights but it is getting rather better than .. Trans-Pacific routes," Mr Tyler said.
"Flights to and from Australia ... are going quite well."
