MANILA, Oct 1 Asia Pulse - The Philippines is regarded as a possible source of teachers and doctors to fill the increasing demand for such professionals in the United Kingdom, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
In a report to the government, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) indicated that the United Kingdom, based on a report from the Philippine diplomatic post in London, is experiencing a serious shortage of both professionals.
The embassy report indicated that the UK had been employing teachers from other countries but the supply of tutors from these countries, except South Africa, has dried up.
The report, which was signed by the Philippine Overseas Labor Officer (POLO) in London, said other countries that are now experiencing shortages of teachers include the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Consequently, the UK is looking for new sources of teachers, especially from the Philippines, to fill vacancies at the Local Education Authorities (LEA).
The report said the UK needs teachers in mathematics, science, music, modern European languages, and food technology, particularly in the primary and secondary schools.
