Henry Miller's 1948 parable about the circus, The Smile at the Foot of the Ladder; recounts the story of Auguste, a clown who achieves fame for his impersonation of "the simulation of ecstasy, which he had brought to perfection." [1] in a sudden moment of real transcendence, the clown finds truth, which makes it impossible for him to continue to act the part.
