What's going on with the guys who officiate NFL games? Why are they throwing so many flags? The games are taking too long, and the officials are not helping. This is how a lot of fans feel, so I decided to do some research on it.

I was expecting to find that officials are flag happy. But after studying lots of tapes, I realized that nearly every call was justified. As a matter of fact, they should throw even more flags.

The problem falls on the players' shoulders. In many cases, they aren't doing their jobs or are out of position, and they commit fouls to make up for these mistakes.

We all know that free agency, salary-cap issues and player movement make for constantly changing personnel in all 31 locker rooms. Also, assistant coaches seem to move as frequently as players. The bottom line: Players are not prepared. They aren't as immersed in their playbooks as they need to be. ...
