To properly chronicle the renaissance of the Rams' defense, one must begin at the beginning. So last Tuesday afternoon, Lovie Smith popped a tape into the VCR in his second-floor office at Rams Park.

6-1-01 A.M. read the title on the screen. First day of minicamp. First drill.

The defense lined up against a skeleton offense composed of a center, a running back, secondary coach Ron Meeks at quarterback and Smith, the Rams' new defensive coordinator, playing tight end. The ball was snapped and Meeks pitched to the running back, who ran a few steps to his right.
