Brandon Doman, BYU
It's late, but BYU officials are trying frantically to get their man Doman in the Heisman Trophy race.
They threw out a poster of Doman standing with a menacing look and a caption that reads: "Domanator." Please. We're talking about a 24-year-old Eagle Scout who looks more like the poster boy for Mormon missionaries.
"He looks more like my dad," says center Jason Scukanec.
Doman doesn't play like him, however. He hasn't lost since winning the starting job with two games to go last season, and the Cougars (8-0) are the last minor-conference unbeaten challenging the BCS. The last BYU quarterback to have this kind of start was Robbie Boscoe, who led the Cougars to a perfect 13-0 record in 1984--and the national championship.
"All we want is a chance," Doman says of this year's team. The problem is, a weak schedule is hurting BYU's computer numbers, even as Doman puts up bloated numbers week after week. He has thrown for 2,104 yards and 22 touchdowns and rushed for 273 yards and six scores.
One more thing: He has played with a separated right throwing shoulder since Week 2. That's Domanating--er, dominating--any way you spell it.
