The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks led almost overnight to increased security measures at airports, national monuments, and border crossings. The new rules are intended to make travel safer and more secure, though they may cause inconvenience as people adjust. In the long run, both government and industry will need to do more to make travel in general, and air and train travel in particular, inherently safer.
Individual travelers will need to become more vigilant, more attuned to what others are doing in an airport or train station. Now more than ever, people need to be patient and respectful of others' rights and liberties. But at the same time, suspicious behavior ...
