QUEBEC--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 9, 2001
Ultramar Diamond Shamrock Corp.'s Chairman, President and CEO Jean Gaulin was honored yesterday when the company renamed its flagship Canadian refinery the "Jean Gaulin Refinery."
Ultramar Diamond Shamrock (NYSE:UDS) ("UDS") employees, politicians and Canadian residents gathered at 6:30 p.m. at the Chateau Frontenac Hotel near the company's Quebec Refinery to celebrate the unveiling of the plaque commemorating Gaulin's extensive contributions to UDS.
The honor acknowledges Gaulin's retirement later this year and honors his continued dedication to the company and its Quebec Refinery in particular. Bill Klesse, UDS' executive vice president, refining operations, officially revealed the inscription and announced the new name of the facility.
As a 29-year-old engineer with Ultramar, Gaulin supervised construction of the Quebec Refinery before it became operational in 1971. He then managed operations at the refinery that occupies 2.5 million square meters on the St. Lawrence River in St. Romuald. Gaulin's hard work, commitment and excellent leadership skills earned him the role as president of Ultramar Canada Inc. and then CEO of Ultramar PLC, a multinational company.
In 1991, Gaulin made headlines when he led Ultramar Corporation through an IPO, successfully separating it from its parent company, which had been acquired in a takeover by the British oil company Lasmo PLC. In that same year, Ultramar Corporation became an Quebec Refinery independent refining and marketing company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Gaulin was appointed Chairman and CEO of Ultramar Corporation within a year following the successful IPO.
