Tuesday, August 21st, was "Freedom Day" in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Thousands of people rallied in support of desperate farmers and ranchers who have been battling for survival since April, when federal authorities cut off their water to benefit "endangered" sucker fish and Coho salmon. Without water, crops already in the field were destroyed and livestock was forced to the auction block at a loss. In July, a steady trickle of water was released to the parched farms. That enabled some farmers to grow a little pasture or plant a late crop of hay. But on August 23rd, the federal government turned off the water again, before many growers could get a cutting of hay. The latest cut-off seemed to be nothing less than an intentional death blow, cruelly timed and aimed to finish off the farmers and ranchers.
