When looking for good fuel economy, there's more to consider than simply how much you pay at the pump. Currently, the most fuel-efficient vehicles are those powered by a gas/electric hybrid powertrain or by diesel fuel. The most notable difference between the two is that hybrids also provide ultra-clean emissions, while diesels emit a higher level of pollutants than conventional gasoline engines.
Three models of each type are now sold in the U.S. The Honda Insight, the first hybrid to be introduced here, is still our mileage champ at 51 mpg overall, but it's a small, cramped two-seater with little storage room. The much nicer Toyota Prius and the new-for-2003 ...
