Sure, your child's wish list will be your guide this holiday. But we encourage you to stray from the page. "Hot" toys that are heavily advertised to kids often amount to flashes in the pan. Toys that engage children--those they go back to time and again--take a little searching.

We've tried to do the work for you by evaluating 25 toys, mostly new to stores this year. Our help: a child psychologist and dozens of kid testers ages 4 to 12. We found real winners--and real duds. Scores are based mainly on our assessment of the toy's quality, how fun it is to play with, and how well it can be used as intended.
