As sure as the sun rising in the east, the DVD player is displacing the VCR as the device of choice for viewing prerecorded movies. Digital recording via a DVD recorder or digital video recorder is another matter for now; the hardware is relatively new and sometimes expensive. That's why, for the next several years, the humble VCR is likely to remain the device most people use to record programs off the air and to transfer home camcorder movies onto a convenient viewing format.
