Abstract

High-stakes testing has created an atmosphere that is frustrating for teachers. Due to the current political emphasis on student achievement tests, teachers are pressured to "teach to the test" so that schools can post improved test scores. This environment has a chilling impact on teaching and learning. By engaging in active, focused reflection over the course of one academic year teachers learn to focus on teaching rather than on testing. The evidence indicates that teacher attitude improves and student achievement improves as well.
