Bus 174," the jolting new documentary by Brazilian director Jose Padilha, opens with a dizzying aerial shot that races high over Rio de Janeiro. It's a lovely take, but this is no postcard. In seconds, the camera skims from silver ocean and verdant peaks smack into the favelas, Rio's infamous shantytowns. In Edenic Rio, this picture warns, the fall will be fast.
From the opening credits, "Bus 174" is a bumpy ride. It recounts the chaotic afternoon of June 12, 2000, when Sandro do Nascimento--young, black, desperate and probably stoned--hijacked a bus on a busy Rio thoroughfare.
