Is de Ferran finished?
A rumor is going around that the driving career of two-time CART champion Gil de Ferran is over following his second major accident in the Indy Racing League in six months (AW, March 31). De Ferran suffered a concussion and broken vertebrae in his neck and lower back March 23 at Phoenix, forcing him to the sidelines for the upcoming race in Japan. He had a more severe concussion and a broken wrist in the race at Chicagoland Speedway last fall, causing him to miss the season-ending race at Texas. The IRL's medical services director, Henry Bock, said de Ferran needs a minimum of four weeks to recover from the fractures. Neither fracture is expected to require surgery, Bock said. De Ferran's impact with the Phoenix track's wall registered 75.6 gs, an IRL official said.
