Every two years, the city prepares a capital improvements budget. Each councilor gets to designate $1 million for specific projects in his or her district. Here are councilors' thoughts on projects for 2003 and a list of projects designated in 2001, the first year of the practice.

MIGUEL GOMEZ

Priorities: "I'm looking at finishing projects that are close to completion. Parks are a big thing on the West Side, and completing five to 10 parks is one of the main things I'm looking at $50,000 for a park here, a couple of hundred thousand for a park there."

2001 projects in District 1 (then represented by Alan Armijo):

*West Mesa Aquatic Center Development, $250,000.

*Cibola High School Pool, $250,000.

*Westgate Pool, $250,000.

*Shawn McWethy Police Substation, $250,000.

VINCE GRIEGO

Priorities: "Sidewalks, streetlights, parks and speed humps. So far, that's about it and the medians. And I've talked to the principal of Garfield Junior High School about lights to help cars get from the school out onto Fourth …
