"Change has a considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may get worse. To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may get better. To the confident it is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better."

How apt these words--spoken by King Whitney Jr. to inspire businessmen at a sales meeting in 1967--seem to us here at the MSPCA today. For these are indeed times of flux and opportunity for the Society as it prepares to welcome a successor to Dr. Gus W. Thornton, now president emeritus of the MSPCA.

It is my pleasure to announce that Dr. Larry Hawk--a man uniquely qualified to help us meet today's challenges--has joined the Society as its eighth president. In addition to his vast experience in the humane, veterinary, and business communities, Dr. Hawk has a deep commitment to, and respect for, the mission and programs of the MSPCA.

He previously served as president of the ASPCA (a New York City-based humane organization separate from the MSPCA). Earlier in his career he held leadership roles with PETsMART Veterinary Services, PETsMART Charities, and Hill's Pet Nutrition, and he has been a practicing veterinarian.

Dr. Hawk joins an organization that, like other nonprofits; is working harder than ever to meet its goals. In the current economic climate, the support of our members and friends becomes even more crucial to our work on behalf of animals.

This year, as we looked for ways to make the most of our resources, we have reluctantly decided to cut back on our publications. Animals magazine will be published only twice in 2003, and most of our Animal Action readers will receive three issues of our newsletter. We are confident we will to return to a full publication schedule soon.
