2003 APR 10 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The tumor suppressor maspin inhibits angiogenesis in breast malignancies.
According to recent research from Germany, "maspin is a novel serine protease inhibitor with tumor suppressing activity in breast and other cancers. Being a class II tumor suppressor, its genomic DNA remains intact in course of malignant transformation. The mechanism for maspin's tumor suppressing activity has not been fully elucidated."
"New studies show that maspin is capable of inhibiting angiogenesis. A direct interaction of maspin with the tumor suppressor gene p53 has also been shown. Immunohistochemical and RT-PCR experiments confirm a stepwise loss of maspin expression during malignant transformation in breast carcinomas," wrote M. Ziebart and colleagues, University of Frauenklin Kiel.
"Besides breast carcinoma, maspin also seems to play an important role for the invasion and metastasis of prostate and other cancers. ...
